Spring, which in Switzerland begins in March and lasts until mid-June, is one of the seasons, along with fall, that most attracts the attention of guests from tropical countries. And this season is one of the most beautiful for many visitors. In this article, I’ll explain why this is and what special experiences you can have in the mountains, in cities and also on the water.
I’ll start with mountain excursions: as the snow in the higher altitudes, which include the excursion destinations Jungfraujoch / Top of Europe, Titlis, the Zermatt region, which includes the Matterhorn and the Gornergrat, melts only slowly in spring, the white splendor is often still meters thick. Experiencing snow for the first time is particularly pleasant at this time of year, because the air temperatures are much higher and thick winter clothes are no longer necessary. A special tip: traveling by train through the landscapes of the region from cities such as Chur (Graubünden), Lucerne (Central Switzerland) or Bern to the mountain destinations is particularly attractive: you start at almost summer-like temperatures and amidst already green meadows or fields of blossoming flowers, and shortly afterwards you arrive at your destination amidst the last snow of winter. The Bernina Express, Golden Line Express or Glacier Express take you through the countryside on particularly picturesque routes and even offer the chance to eat regional specialties on board. But beware: many of these offers sell out quickly, so it’s important to contact us in advance in order to make reservations. Destino Suíça is a recognized reseller of all tickets and knows all the special offers and conditions.
Activities around the cities can also be enjoyed particularly well at this time of year. On both Lake Zurich and Lake Lucerne, for example, there are round trips of varying lengths, which are a welcome addition to strolling around the historic center and exploring museums. But the cuisine deserves a special mention: in spring, several specialties can be found on the menus of good restaurants that shouldn’t be missed: white and green asparagus offered by local farmers just 50 km away with various side dishes, dishes with freshly picked morel mushrooms and risotto, and pasta dishes with wild garlic sauces and fillings will delight you. Pssst: With a bit of luck, you’ll also be able to taste the first fresh strawberries at the end of April!
As I write this article, I’m already looking forward to next spring, whether in the mountains or in my hometown of Zurich. We look forward to making your trip at this time of year an unforgettable experience.
